June's Room

Wonder

Wonder - R.J. Palacio I read this with my 8 year old daughter (we took turns). She and I laughed, cried, and frequently got mad while reading this story of a boy born with facial abnormalities struggling to navigate the shark-infested waters of middle school..
We are in the UK and although this is set in the US we could relate so much to these characters. I felt the author had really captured the way kids speak and think . She put them in some pretty tough situations..as a parent my heart damn near broke at times, and my child bristled with indignation at the meanness of some of the protagonist's classmates. It gave us a lot to talk about..school, friendships,family..
Short sections in this book make it easy to read in parts..we read it over several nights, and I think it was time very well spent..
