I got half, maybe two thirds of the way through this before I did what I really hate to do and gave up..I just couldn't be bothered.. I can't help thinking that if I had read this in my youth I would have found the tempestuous love affair between Nathan and Sophie highly romantic, and the constant sexual references vaguely exciting, but as a jaded middle-aged woman with real-life problems to worry about I couldn't bring myself to give too hoots about them..
I never saw the film of this novel in the 80's so didn't really know what to expect , and many other seem to like it, but for me it was turgid and unengaging...
