this series of vignettes are loosely connected as they describe moments in the lives of their characters as a piece of art is created around the theme of a woman reading.They span history from the 13th century to the near future, and are beautifully observed and written with great subtlety.
Why only four stars? I just could not get myself comfortable with the lack of speech marks. To begin with, especially, it interrupted the flow as I had to backtrack more than once to be sure who was speaking to whom. I didn't like it and for me it detracted from the experience of reading. I sincerely hope it doesn't become the new norm..
