Sacred Hearts

Sacred Hearts - Sarah Dunant This story of a convent in 16th century Italy really gripped me from start to finish. It's about power really; the power of a girl's family to put her away against her will, the power of the Church and the struggles for control within the convent itself.Whenever I read or see anything about nuns I immediately think of the atmospheric film 'Black Narcissus' as a sister slowly goes out of her mind from the isolation of her particular circumstances. This wasn't quite as fevered as that although there was plenty of emotion as one might expect in a group of women cloistered together without contact with the outside world..
